Leadership and Influential skills are extremely important because they differentiate an extraordinary individual from the ordinary. Leaders are brave enough to try things that no one else will. Unlike individuals who do the same as everyone else, leaders/influential people are able to inspire change, ideas, and new ways of doing old things. I view myself as specifically having these qualities because I am not one to fit in or follow others. I do my best to take charge in every situation in which I am able. I am passionate about causes that I feel require change and I act on this feelings.
For my first influential skill example I would like to go back to the proposal for the homeless drop-in center I mentioned in my analytic/problem solving skills tab. Shortly after completing this proposal, Tempe passed an ordinance which banned the homeless from sitting on the street. This attempt to selfishly cast the homeless out of Tempe's streets with zero consideration for their well-being sent me straight into action. I went to Facebook and asked my friends for their help to protest the ban and the response was incredible. We attended city council meetings and spoke about the issue, protested by sitting on the sidewalk, and handed out food, socks and toiletries to the homeless inhabitants of Mill Avenue.
The second artifact demonstrating my influential leadership skills is a persuasive paper arguing against the banning of books in the US. This paper meant a lot to me to write and made me physically upset to write about. I am very passionate about the subject and I think it really comes through in my writing. Although I wrote this paper for school, since then I have sent it to many people I have encountered who are curious about the subject. I hope anyone who reads it will be influenced by my words to fight against the censorship of these amazing books in America as I have done.
